Back in October I waxed rhapsodic about film composer Thomas Newman. Last week I finally manage to track down a high-quality boot of his score for the Paul Brickman film, Men Don’t Leave (Brickman, you might remember, had the musical wherewithall to use Tangerine Dream for his earlier film, Risky Business.) This score even contains the in-movie avant-garde piece that Arliss Howard’s character was to have composed (and is performed in the film, complete with staccato typewriter strikes and hand-cranked egg-beaters.)
There are no track titles, though I’m currently scouring the internet for clues. Check out Track Eight in the meantime:
Men Don’t Leave: mp3
Now to wait for this odd, beautifully composed, strangely overlooked film to come to DVD…

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Your information of this piece of music has solved a many years old mystery for me.
When I first saw this film I was moved by this scene where they are playing this unique piece of music, but I didn’t make note of it at the time and soon I forgot what movie it was in. Until a couple days ago when I happened across the movie on cable (but missed this particular scene – darn it!) and recognized the warehouse…and started on an internet search for more information about the music.
Alas, I’m very disappointed to learn that this was not a working group of musicians and that I will not be able to find a full album of this music, but I’m happy to have solved the mystery.
Thanks for the MP3!!!
No problem. If you’d like an mp3 of that particular avant garde piece, drop me an email. I’ll get it to you. Newman did have an experimental side project he recorded under called “Tokyo 7” but it’s not exactly the same stuff.
I am interested in adding the song from men don’t leave to my library and any other music from the movie as well. could you let me know how I can get it. thanks. Trent
I too have been searching for this soundtrack. Thanks for posting the MP3.
“Men don/t Leave” has been one of my favorite movies for quite a while. Just saw it again last night and had forgotten the mezermizing orchestral production by Thomas Newman. I do not have an MP3 player and am painfully techno-challenged. Is there ANY way to get the cut on a CD?
Thanks for the info,
Laura
i saw men don’t leave in the theaters at age 14 and have looked for it’s music ever since, happy for the amount of work t newman has had since (see movies often only because he scored it) but secretly frustrated by the lack of knowledge or reference to what i believe is his most superior musical score. it is a virtually and wildly underrated movie. if you have any advice on how to get the entire soundtrack i would be eternally grateful.

i too am interested in getting the rest of the newman score from men don’t leave. it’s one of the best movies scores of it’s kind. no clue why it’s never been released.
Ahh, yes! I’ve been searching high and low to track down the Thomas Newman score for Men Don’t Leave with absolutely NO luck. It would be GREATLY appreciated if you could provide the remaining tracks to this score.
Cheers.
Track 8, which reminds me of Newman’s score for “Desperately Seeking Susan,” sounds gorgeous. Thank you for sharing it. I love the entire score to “Men Don’t Leave” (especially the slower pieces and the cue played during the Chris O’Donnell-Arliss Howard scene on the waterfront). I would be so grateful if you could share the entire score. Thanks again.
I have a CD of 12 peices of music, If you want them, let me know and I will email them, unless there is an easy way to post them here. If somebody knows how, let me know and I will email the to you and you can post them.

Nice!. Glad we could be of help. I’ve been giving away the S/T to whomever asks, but that link is just as good.
Hi. Where could I get scores from this soundtrack? I really love the themes.
Alfred, you mean the printed scores? I have no earthly idea. Might be hard to track down.
Hi, sorry I’m so late to the discussion here, but is the soundtrack still available to those who ask? I’ve been wanting it for nearly 20 years now and hope I may finally get it. Please, oh please. Thank You.
I heard good things about this and would love to work to it. Can I please get a copy.
I’ve been looking for this soundtrack for a long time. Can you post or email the rest of the music from the soundtrack?
Thanks.
Hi there,
I have been searching for the soundtrack to MEN DON’T LEAVE ever since I first saw the film on it’s cinema release. I’ve come across your site and would be extremely grateful if you could direct me to where I can download the full soundtrack. I am willing to pay.
Many thanks
Andrew
Hi!
I too would LOVE to have this soundtrack. It got me interested in a group called Penguin Cafe Orchestra, but nowhere could I find the specific tunes from this movie. One of my top ten of all time, BTW.
Please let me know where I can find a copy of the soundtrack for purchase. . . it seems the LossLess site needs me to be invited!
thx

Will, can you please send me whatever you have from Men Dont Leave (the Thomas Newman pieces?) I’d be SO grateful. To girlgoa@gmail.com. Major thanks!
I tried to download the mp3 here but was not successful. Could you send me a downloadable copy of the songs you have from Men Don’t Leave? I would be so grateful! :)
LOVE this music! You can find ALL 17 tracks on this website http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjYD5GFme8U The individual has files compressed ready for download and FREE! The file is virus and adware free. Safe to download!
I keep posting this movie in favorites, and “undiscovered treasures” and “things not appreciated enough, in their time” etc. It is a GEM, start to finish, and the music and musicians, add an air of magic to the whole. Everyone involved, should be very proud. I read that Debra Winger was so enamored with the Arliss Howard character (the perfect boyfriend!) that she looked him up, and they’re STILL a couple, and have a son together!
These links here to get this music don’t seem to work now. I would love to get a copy of the soundtrack for “Men Don’t Leave”.
Don’t imagine I could purchase that and use it on my website.

Hello,
I would be really grateful if you could send all the track on my email address, i have been searching the album for such a long time !
thank you very much !
I have no idea if anyone still monitors this thread, but I would be very grateful for a copy of this soundtrack. I cannot find it anywhere to purchase, despite over a decade of searching. My email is abandonallhope84@aol.com. Thanks so much if anyone happens to see this and responds.
Not sure if you continue to check this. I’ve had this returning itch with this film. In particular, the warehouse music scene as mentioned above.
As both a musician, AND just a general creative, I’m enamored with such creativity. That piece, for me, was the musical equivalent, say, of photography’s Andy Goldsworthy or John Pfahl. Inventive, intriguing, etc.
Any directions on how to hear the full piece? Do you still have a copy?
